Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer Prevalence in Colorado

Mesothelioma is a tumorous growth affecting the thin tissues that line internal organs. It is one of the most aggressive forms of cancer, and one of its primary causes is exposure to a fibrous mineral known as asbestos.

The age-adjusted rate of mesothelioma in Colorado from 2017 to 2021 was 0.7 per 100,000 people, with 223 new cases reported during this period. Occupational asbestos exposure has been one of the leading causes of mesothelioma in the Centennial State.

Occupational exposure remains one of the most significant contributors to asbestos-related diseases in Colorado.

Lung cancer is another serious disease linked to asbestos exposure. In 2023, an estimated 2,600 new cases of lung and bronchus cancer and 1,450 related deaths were reported in Colorado.

Between 2017 and 2021, the age-adjusted lung cancer rate was 37.7 per 100,000 people, with 12,034 new cases reported statewide. In 2024, the new lung cancer rate was 37.9 per 100,000 people, which is lower than the national average of 53.6. Colorado ranks fourth in the United States for lung cancer incidence, with a 17% improvement in new case rates over the past five years.
